The Siege of Bethlehem, December 1762: What Two Witnesses Don’t Yet Prove
By L'équipe Levantine Lives ·
On 4 December 1762, a hand slips a note into the baptismal register of the parish of St Catherine at Bethlehem. It is not a formal entry: no one was born that day. It is an account, written in the margin of the register’s ordinary business.
Note. In the year of the Lord as above, on 4 December, Osman Pasha of Damascus came down with his army and a good number of villagers from other towns […] and laid siege to this town of David. The people of Bethlehem having resisted, sixty-one men were killed on the Pasha’s own side in the first clash.
The account runs five days: four days of cannon fire against the monasteries, more than four hundred shots without damage, then a delegation kissing the pasha’s hand on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. He pardons the town, takes more than thirty thousand piastres from the three convents, the tens digit illegible, and withdraws. The villagers who come out "found the dead unburied, doors broken, houses empty."
A second witness, four days later
On 8 December, the same parish’s burial register records the death of a six-month-old boy, Peter, son of Joseph and Catherine abu Danei.
his small body was buried in the lower garden near the walls, because of the war between Osman Pasha of Damascus, who invaded this town, and the people of Bethlehem, who, rising up against him, won a great and praiseworthy victory over him.
It is the only impact the corpus records on a named person, and it concerns the burial, not the cause of death: nothing states the child died of the siege, only that the war decided where he was laid to rest.
Why the site does not count two witnesses
The two records do not agree on the outcome. The first counts sixty-one dead on the pasha’s side in the first clash. The second, eight days later, in the same parish, speaks of a victory for the people of Bethlehem. Yet both come from the same parish archive, kept in the same religious house, four days apart. The note of 4 December is unsigned. The entry of 8 December is signed by a certain Brother Franciscus, who also signs baptisms in the other register during the same weeks of 1762.
One man alone could have written both. Until someone compares the two hands on the original image, the site’s method counts them as a single witness. This is what the site calls a declared witness regime: the fact stays on display, and so does the reservation.
The siege did happen: sixty-one dead in the first clash according to the account, a population fleeing to the convents, a child buried outside the ordinary cemetery because of the war. But documentary certainty stops exactly where two records stop proving they are two, and where they cannot even agree on who won.
