Plagues and epidemics

Plague

~From 24 June to 1 September 1653

In the summer of 1653, in Bethlehem, the priest of the Latin parish of St Catherine opens his register of the dead seven times in ten weeks. Each time he writes the same word, in the body of the entry and against the name of the deceased: plague.

The first entry is dated 24 June.

Margarita filia Andreæ è Ciuitate Bethlehem etatis annorum duorum peste mortua Deo animam reddidit.

Working translation: "Margarita, daughter of Andrew, of the city of Bethlehem, aged two years, dead of the plague, rendered her soul to God."

Bethlehem, St Catherine, register of deaths, film 8189367, image 332, folio 82; burial of 24 June 1653

Five more follow, in close succession: a boy of about seventeen on 29 June, a girl of about fourteen on 7 July, a boy of three on 22 July, a girl of six on 29 July, a boy of about five on 7 August. Each time, the priest records the same cause. Those six are laid in the new cemetery.

The seventh is not. On 1 September, a young woman of twenty-three dies in her turn.

Catharina filia Fran[cisci] … etatis annorum 23 peste mortua est.

Working translation: "Catharina, daughter of Francis (…), aged 23, is dead of the plague."

Bethlehem, St Catherine, register of deaths, film 8189367, image 333, folio 88; burial of 1 September 1653

She had married a Greek, against the will of the superiors and without the blessing of the Church, and for that had been excommunicated. Dying, the sanction was lifted; a Maronite priest gave her the sacraments. But since it could not be established that she had met the conditions of the dispensation, the superiors ordered that she be buried outside the enclosure of the new cemetery, without the rites of the Church.

sine Ecclesiasticis ceremonijs extra Cemeteriũ nouũ sepulta fuit, Sup[eriorum] iussu.

Working translation: "without the ecclesiastical ceremonies, was buried outside the new cemetery, by order of the Superiors."

Bethlehem, St Catherine, register of deaths, film 8189367, image 333, folio 88; same entry of 1 September 1653

The scribe had first written "in". He struck it out, and wrote "extra" above the line: a hesitation of the pen, kept in the ink.

That year, the parish celebrates no marriage, whereas there had been twelve the year before and six the year after. The register itself keeps writing. On 30 November 1653, it records another death, of another cause:

Becla montis Libani, Græca Catholica … febre irruente spiritum Deo reddidit.

Working translation: "Becla, of Mount Lebanon, Greek Catholic (…), rendered her spirit to God, a fever having seized her."

Bethlehem, St Catherine, register of deaths, film 8189367, image 333, folio 88; entry of 30 November 1653, buried on 1 December

The priest thus distinguishes his ills: when he writes plague, it is not a vague word, it is a diagnosis he does not set down lightly.

What the Bethlehem register documents stops at its own parish. Two years later, an apostolic visitation from Rome attests that more than fifteen Franciscan friars had been sick in the Custody that same year, without saying where. This contagion among the friars has a fiche of its own (§19 below): another word, another population, a count of the sick and not of the dead. The two facts share a year, and nothing more.

What this event does not cover

  • Jérusalem

AUCUNE attestation propre.

Sources and method

Seven burial entries, one single parish register: Bethlehem, St Catherine, film 8189367, folios 82 and 88. A single hand writes them across two folios of the same volume: they count as one witness, never as seven. This is why both boundaries, 24 June and 1 September 1653, remain hypotheses until a second holding or another hand confirms them.

The search covered the whole transcribed corpus, in four languages, across 56,273 entries. The court of Jerusalem, abundant that year (110 entries in its best-filled register, five in a second), and the register of St Saviour (4 entries) write no word of epidemic: a holding that is covered yet silent is a silence, never proof of having been spared. Three hits found elsewhere in the corpus proved unrelated once read at the verbatim: a workshop comment, a case of leprosy dated 1654, and a word caught inside another word.

One piece alone might have given a second witness: an apostolic visitation report of 1655 mentions "il contaggio del anno 1653" in the Custody of the Holy Land. It is read and discussed in full in the fiche "Contagion: Custody of the Holy Land, 1653" (§19), devoted to it in its own right. It gives neither a day nor a month, names no place, and speaks of religious, not laity: it closes neither of Bethlehem's two boundaries, and the hypothesis stands.

The series from the same volume, over 1648-1658 excluding 1653, can be counted in two ways, and we give both because we cannot choose between them. Taking only the years in which the register enters at least one burial, the median is two a year, and 1653, with its eight, is worth four times as much. Counting as zero the three years in which the register enters nothing (1648, 1649, 1657), the median falls to one and a half and the ratio rises to five. A year without a burial entered in a register as loose as this one is not a year proved without deaths: hence both figures. The base is too short to carry a firm judgment, and a ratio built on two entries measures, it does not qualify. The marriage register of the same parish adds a complementary signal, never a proof: twelve in 1652, zero in 1653, six in 1654.

An earlier reading of this dossier stated that all seven burials lay in the new cemetery. Re-reading the entry of 1 September corrects this: the seventh is excluded from it, for the canonical reason cited above. The digest pointed a direction; the entry decided.
